Translator is dedicated to believers in the idea of a revolution; any believers, irrespective of the side of the ideological barricade on which they stand and what pushes them to their revolutionary upsurge. The memorial is in the form of a guillotine referred to as the Red Widow. Its presence and activity in the public space gathered crowds willing to watch the show of the falling heads – fall of the enemies of the issue. A guillotine is a cross-cultural symbol of breaking a dispute using terror. Translator is an art object in the public space created to translate the logic of a social dispute into all languages of the world. Michał Frydrych Monument of the Principle of Reality Pure chance? I don’t think so! One of alternative monuments among projects presented during this year’s Open City Festival is the work by Michał Frydrych “Monument of the Principle of Reality. Pure chance? I don’t think so!”. It is alternative in terms of the topic and form; the artist departs from deadly seriousness typical for monumental art towards the sense of humour. Frydrych’s work takes the form of an animated neon sign making references to visually enchanting illuminated signs that embellished Polish cities in the late 1950s and 1960s. Neon sign, just like a classical monument, is a typical example of urban art. It is no exaggeration to say that a sandwich that slips out of hands and lands on the ground is a universal human experience, at least in all places where sandwiches can be made. The fact that it usually hits the ground with the covered side is something more than just pure chance as this happens far too often. However trivial, an object falling down signals a quiet, existential drama. Quiet, as it gets us when we don’t expect it – in the universe of things that are familiar and submissive to us. However, as life shows us, everything eventually comes to an end. And when things become unleashed, they reveal our helplessness in the face of the strokes of fate. And it is this vulnerability to the wheels of fate that the project is about.
